Because of the rise in COVID cases and the request from city officials to limit gatherings, we are Canceling/Adapting the picnic at the cemetery.
Here’s the new plan:
• We will not be gathering together in any formal way.
• Jolt will still be painting the mural tomorrow so if you’d like to see him painting live and converse with him, that’s still happening between 3-5pm.
• Feel free to go to Riverside tomorrow while it’s sunny, or on Sunday while it’s snowing, or anytime until Halloween.
• We will send out video links from our performers and conversation facilitators in another email tomorrow, with prompts and thoughts and performances so that you can still have guidance when you go to Riverside on your own time with friends or strangers.
• If you are so moved, upload your own video response to the prompts and tag us on social media, send us an email, or yell at us next time we see you in person.
Thank you so much for understanding.
Evan, Bobby, Molina, Kerrie, Jolt, Izaiah, Candi, and everyone on the Warm Cookies of the Revolution team.
Bring your own picnic (please be respectful of the space and of social distancing) and we can learn, connect, and dream together about the future.
We know that folks are interested in connecting during these distanced times so we’re cooking something up with interesting people and artists, and yes, we’ll even have some cookies you can grab and eat…
Some things we’re considering:
•People used to gather at cemeteries in this way in the US (and still do all over the world).
•The people who literally built the city of Denver are buried at Riverside. Maybe we need inspiration on how to rebuild a community that works for all and learning about their lives could help a bit?
•It is literally a dead place. They lost their water rights. What does that mean for a place that is supposed to be around forever?
•Riverside is in the middle of the most rapidly gentrifying/fied neighborhood in the city. What will become of these burial grounds?
•Death is ever present right now so maybe we should directly address what that means with honesty and clarity?
•There are confederate Civil War memorials at Riverside, as well as a section full of Union soldiers.
•There are individuals buried at Riverside that have incredible stories we can learn from; about abolition, justice, war…..and more and more…
Stay tuned and RSVP if you can so we can plan accordingly.
